Production Resumes on Emily in Paris Despite Tragic Loss of Assistant Director

Venice / Los Angeles, August 2025 — Filming for the fifth season of Netflix’s hit series Emily in Paris resumed on August 23 in Venice, just two days after the tragic death of assistant director Diego Borella, officials confirmed to PEOPLE and Entertainment Weekly.

A Sudden Loss on Set

The production encountered a heartbreaking moment on August 21, when Borella, aged 47, collapsed while preparing for a final scene inside the historic Hotel Danieli. He was quickly attended to by medical personnel but was tragically pronounced dead at approximately 7:00–7:30 p.m. local time, with reports indicating a likely heart attack as the cause.

Borella had recently been celebrated for his artistic aptitude—trained across Rome, London, and New York, and recognized for his contributions to visual arts, literature, and even children’s storytelling. Colleagues remembered him for his talent, humor, and stylish presence.

A Somber Pause, Followed by Continuation

Following this shock, production was temporarily halted. By Saturday, however, the cast—including Lily Collins (Emily), Eugenio Franceschini, Ashley Park, and Paul Forman—returned to work, filming scenes on a Venetian boat. Filming is expected to wrap around August 25, ahead of the December 18 premiere.

A spokesperson for Paramount Television Studios expressed, “We are deeply saddened to confirm the sudden passing of a member of the ‘Emily in Paris’ production family. Our hearts go out to the individual’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”

Borella: A Creative Force Beyond Directing

Borella’s role extended beyond assisting with production logistics. Known as a multidisciplinary artist, he actively engaged in visual arts, literature, and the creative process, bringing depth and sensitivity to the show's Venice shoot. A friend shared how his elegance, humor, and brilliance left a lasting impression.

Season 5: A Look Ahead

Season 5 promises dramatic new sights as Emily takes on challenges in both Rome and Venice. The upcoming storyline tests Emily’s professional and romantic boundaries—especially as her work ideas backfire, and a closely held secret threatens her relationships.

Despite Borella’s passing, the show’s momentum continues as the team strives to honor his memory and role in shaping this chapter of Emily in Paris.

Summary

The production of Emily in Paris experienced a tragic loss when assistant director Diego Borella collapsed and died on set. After a brief pause, filming resumed, honoring Borella’s contributions while embracing the show’s forward journey.
